The one-bedroom apartment at 7 Rue de Belfort is located in a quiet, secure residential building on a side street off Boulevard Voltaire (one of Paris' main arteries designed in the 19th century by Baron Haussman). It is on the second floor (third floor by American count), and there is no elevator. The outside door of the building is accessed by a digicode that you tap into the keypad by the door. The apartment consists of a large living-dining room with an American-style fully-equipped kitchen in one corner. There is a CD-player with radio and tape cassette. There is a single sofa-bed in this room. The bedroom, off the living room, has a double bed. The small bathroom is equipped with a shower. Two blocks from Rue de Belfort is the Place Léon Blum, where there are supermarkets, bakeries, restaurants, cafés, bus stops, banks, a taxi rank and a Métro station (see below for more information). From the apartment, it is only 15 minutes' walk to the Place de la Bastille, where there are many restaurants and bars, and, in the other direction, it's less than 10 minutes' walk to the entrance of the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery, last resting place of many famous people: Chopin, Gertrude Stein, Oscar Wild and Jim Morrison are just a few. The neighbourhood is primarily residential, very well-lighted and safe, with a mixed population of middle class, working class, artists and even some actors. You can get a good feel of the real Paris here. Public transportation is excellent (see below), and you can get to just about anywhere in Paris in half an hour or less. (And now there is a VeLib' bicycle rental station on the corner, which has become a very popular means of transportation since it was introduced in July 2007.) Click on image to view at full size |
